Shadow Negotiation

I DON'T SIT AT THE TABLE—BUT I SET THE DECISIVE COURSE

The best support in a negotiation is often the kind the other side doesn't see.

I empower companies and individuals to achieve optimal negotiation outcomes through a comprehensive, methodologically sound approach. My training services cover both direct and indirect negotiations and focus on price and contract negotiations as well as strategic partnerships.

Using advanced negotiation methods based on the Harvard model—including value-based negotiation, game theory approaches, personality analysis, and indirect negotiation techniques—I offer practical training for complex negotiations, individual coaching, and team workshops tailored to each client’s specific circumstances.

My goal is to build self-confidence, sharpen negotiation skills, and secure sustainable agreements.

Whether I’m supporting teams or individuals, I help my clients master both the visible and hidden dynamics of negotiations, thereby ensuring measurable results and long-term success.

What is this about?

Shadow Negotiation means: I support your team during ongoing negotiations without being visible myself. I analyze the initial situation, help develop the strategy, prepare your team, and guide the process—working discreetly in the background for maximum impact.

This isn’t a one-time briefing before a meeting. Shadow Negotiation is ongoing support—spanning weeks or months. I contribute my perspective when new information emerges. I adjust the strategy when the other side acts unexpectedly. I help the team keep the big picture in mind when they get bogged down in details.

The goal is not to replace your team—but to empower it to conduct the best possible negotiation. With clarity, strategy, and the confidence that comes from knowing: There’s someone who has the big picture in mind.

In what situations?

Shadow Negotiation is particularly valuable when:

  • The negotiation is strategically significant and spans several months
  • The internal team is experienced but needs an outside perspective and structure
  • The other side is professionally organized and comes well-prepared
  • Internal political dynamics complicate the negotiating position
  • A previous attempt has failed and a new approach is being prepared
  • It is sensitive to visibly involve an external consultant

In short: Whenever there is too much at stake to leave it to chance—and at the same time, too much tact is required to resolve it with a traditional consultant.

What exactly?

Situation Analysis & Strategy Development

We begin with a sober assessment of the situation:

What is your position, and what is the other side’s? Where is the deal space?

What interests, constraints, and alternatives exist on both sides?

Based on this, we work together to develop a negotiation strategy—with clear goals, a concession plan, and a BATNA.

Team Preparation & Role Clarification

I prepare your negotiation team:

Who takes on which role? Who speaks, who observes, who summarizes?

What signals should be sent, and which ones should be avoided?

The team enters the room prepared, aligned, and with a unified approach.

Ongoing Support & Process Management

While the negotiation is underway, I’m available—for debriefs during breaks, strategy adjustments, and any questions that arise in the moment.

I see what the team in the room might no longer see, and provide targeted guidance at the right time.

Analysis & Learning After Each Round

After each discussion, we analyze together:

What signals did the other side send? Where did we do well, and where did we leave room for maneuver? What will we change for the next round?

These reflection cycles are often the moment when the decisive course is set.

What Sets Shadow Negotiation Apart from Consulting:

Continuity Instead of One-Time Consulting

A traditional consultant offers recommendations and leaves. Shadow Negotiation is an ongoing process—I get to know the negotiation, the other side, and your team. This continuity is the key difference.

Practice instead of theory

I don’t bring pre-existing frameworks to apply to your situation.

I start with your specific situation: What’s possible here? What would I be thinking if I were in the other side’s shoes?

What’s the next realistic move?

Invisible when it needs to be

Sometimes it’s important that the other side doesn’t know external support is involved.

I work in a way that makes your team appear confident—because it is confident.

Preparation and support remain internal.

Empowerment Instead of Dependence

My goal is not to be needed indefinitely.

I want your team to negotiate better at the end of our collaboration than they did before—with a clear methodology, defined roles, and the self-confidence that comes from genuine preparation.

Personality as a Negotiation Lever

I also incorporate the personality dimension into negotiation support: What makes the other party tick?

What communication patterns do they use?

Using D.I.S.C. and Profile Dynamics, we develop a profile of the other side—and use that to determine how we can communicate most effectively.

Long-Term Impact

A guided negotiation leaves a lasting impression. The team has learned. The organization has experienced a new approach. And next time, they’ll handle it with a little more confidence. That’s the impact I strive for.

Better results

Negotiations that are prepared in a structured manner and monitored on an ongoing basis lead to better deals—as evidenced by price, terms, and the quality of the relationship

Stronger Teams

Your team continues to develop throughout the process. Their methodology, clarity of roles, and self-confidence grow with each round of negotiations.

Strategic Security

You know there’s someone who keeps the big picture in mind. That sense of security changes the way your team approaches the situation.
